At two o'clock in the afternoon of April 6, 1862, the Federal Army defending the Peach Orchard at Shiloh was under orders to hold at all costs. Suffering heavy losses in four previous attempts, some Confederates were hesitant to attack again until their Commander-in-Chief General Albert Sydney Johnston and Brigadier General John C. Breckinridge rode together along the line pledging to personally lead the charge. General Johnston then rode to the left of the line and General Breckenridge took a place at the right. With the men confident and determined, General Breckinridge let out a mighty shout, which rose high above the sounds of the battle.

A Confederte wve ensued that could not be stopped. They swept through the Peach Orchard in spite of a storm of artillery, which turned the blue sky dark and gray. Bullets ripped through the air clipping the peach blossoms, thereby creating a rain of pink petals. General Breckinridge, while leading the charge, was one of the few who escaped unscathed, as on they charged in hot pursuit of the breaking and fleeing Federals, in the final "Charge Through the Peach Orchard."
