Before World War II a movement arose to place a monument on the Gettysburg battlefield to Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Lee's most trusted and able subordinate. While ground was broken and a model of the equestrian statue was produced, the memorial to Longstreet was never erected. On July 3, 1998, over sixty years after the proposed original monument, and more than a century after the great battle, a statue honoring one of the Army of Northern Virginia's senior commanders was dedicated on Seminary Ridge. In conjunction with this historic event, I decided my summer '98 release should also be a rendition of General Longstreet in the turning point of the American Civil War.

"Old Pete" portrays Longstreet in the famous cannonade prior to Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. Rendered inside the artillery of James Dearing's Confederate artillery battalion, just west of the Emmitsburg Road and near the farm of Peter Rogers, he sets calmly in the saddle. More than once, Longstreet was seen checking the troops and Union dispositions. During the cannonade fellow officer, James L. Kemper, caught a glimpse of him alone and under heavy fire. " I expected to see him fall every instant. Still he moved on, slowly and majestically, with an inspiring confidence, composure, self possession and repressed power, in every moment and look, that fascinated me."

Kemper's recollection of Longstreet that day was what I wanted to capture in my limited edition print of the General. "Old Pete" displays the essence of Longstreet on July 3, 1863, his steady calm demeanor and his unflinching bravery. I can think of no better tribute to the man Lee called his "Old War Horse."
