They march where they are sent, without question, with an unswerving faith in the cause, their homes and the officers that lead them. History will recall the battles and officers by name, but these stalwart men will remain almost nameless. Each will be remembered only as a small part of the whole. The soldiers knew this all too well, as one southern poet lamented: "Only a private! his jacket of grey, Is stained by the smoke and dust; As Bayard he's brave, as Rupert he's gay, Reckless as Murat in heat of the fray, But God is his only trust!
