Irish Brigade Band

By August of 1862 the famed Irish Brigade had not been at war for a year, but the Brigade’s commander, General Thomas F. Meagher was in New York City to recruit new men for his Brigade. His task had been made easier by the members of the Produce Exchange appropriating money for a bounty of $10 each to the first three hundred recruits for the Brigade. With the state and federal bounties it meant a recruit would receive about $140 on joining his regiment. Beside their bounties the new recruits took a new Brigade Band with them to the war. A reporter for the Irish-American described the scene as Meagher left for Harrison’s landing with recruits and a new band:

The new band for the Brigade went out with Gen. Meagher in the Key West. They are under the leadership of Edward Manahan. The members wear a tasteful gray uniform faced with green, and make a handsome appearance. They will be a great addition to the Brigade, and will cheer the tedium of camp life with some of the fine old music of Fatherland, to which every true Celt is so passionately attached.

With less than a year’s service the Irish Brigade had already fought at Fair Oaks, Gaine’s Mill, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp, and Malvern Hill. Still ahead were such battles as Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The Celts of the Irish Brigade would have reason to seek comfort in music in the long, sad months ahead of them.
