The flag was a gift of several young ladies of the City and symbolized both allegiance to the State and the ethnic makeup of the organization. It was described as having one side of white silk with the coat of arms of Georgia surmounted by eleven gold stars with the reverse side of green silk upon which was embroidered the Harp of Erin along with the name of the company and the date of its organization, 1842. At the time of presentation the Greens numbered about 100 men commanded by Captain John Foley. A detachment of the company had been ordered to garrison Fort Pulaski in January and now the entire unit was preparing to move to augment the garrison of the Fort. 1 Militia units, such as the Greens were very much a part of the fabric of pre-war Savannah. The Rules and Minutes meticulously kept by the Irish Jasper Greens leave no doubt these sons of Erin were among the best. 2 In 1861 the Company had both a fatigue and a dress uniform, both of dark blue trimmed in green. It would be the fatigue uniform that would be worn to duty at Fort Pulaski. Within the organization’s Rules it is described as “ A blue jacket with green collar and cuffs, 10 buttons in front, straps on the shoulders to pass the belts under...". The trousers for both uniforms were the same but were dependent upon the season. White linen for Summer with no stripe and dark blue for cooler weather with a 1 ˝ inch green stripe edged with buff down the outer seam. Rank was indicated by chevrons of “ …..green army lace on green cloth laced with buff showing green between the chevrons …….pointing upwards.” The rank of Lance Corporal, indicated by a single chevron, placed its wearer in a command structure between a Private and a full Corporal. 3 While no description of the headgear of the Company is recorded several references are made to white plumes which would be used with the shako popular at the time. The meeting minutes of April 19,1860 show that the Company also purchased Fatigue caps. 4 Given the meticulous care invested in the design of the rest of the uniform, these caps most certainly were designed to complement the rest of the fatigue dress. The property returns of the Irish Jasper Greens for December 1861 indicate that while the muskets carried by the company belonged to the State of Georgia, most accoutrements worn to War were the property of the Confederate States. 5 Of plain leather, these replaced the white buff belts worn prior to the war. 1.
