To further enhance your vintage print collection, we offer the following tips to increase your chances of enjoying your purchase for years to come. Although we can offer no guarantees as to the future life of your paper collectables due to unknown environmental conditions, we can offer these framing and conservation tips to enhance your collection. Your vintage item should provide you with enjoyment for years to come if you will follow these simple suggestions: MATTING: Prints and paper collectibles are best preserved when matted and backed with a Museum quality, "buffered, acid-free Museum quality mat board." Better frame shops will carry these mats, which are only somewhat more expensive than regular acid-free mat board. Museum mat board is the highest quality mat board available, and is preferred by Print Dealers and Conservators worldwide. The next option is regular acid-free mat board, which is a little less expensive, and should only be used if museum mat board is not available in your area. NEVER USE REGULAR MAT BOARD under any circumstances. It has a high acid content, and can cause serious damage to your item. FRAMING: Never frame an item directly against the glass. Always use mat board or some type of spacer to allow the piece to "breath." Items framed directly next to the glass can accumulate moisture between the glass and the item, causing "foxing", (see below), staining, and discoloration. LIGHTING: Keep your item out of direct sunlight and strong fluorescent lighting. UV rays can fade the color over time. Direct sunlight can completely bleach an item! Direct sunlight is to be avoided. STORAGE:Do not store your item in an area high in moisture content, such as the kitchen or bathroom. Moisture can cause bacteria known as "foxing" to collect on your item. These "foxing" areas will appear as brown spots on the surface. UNWRAPPING:Last but not least, when your new purchase arrives, open it very carefully. Remember, tape and sharp objects can quickly damage your vintage item. If you will follow these simple guidelines, you should be able to enjoy your treasure for many generations to come. These rules are generally applicable to all paper and fabric collectibles, including prints, drawings, etchings, stitched items and most other "fragile" artifacts. |
