About Geoff Hunt

Geoff Hunt is best known for painting the covers of Patrick O'Brian novels, where his meticulous attention to historical detail serves him well. A member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, his work is found in the Royal Naval Museum, Royal Naval Submarine Museum, Mystic Maritime Gallery and private collections worldwide. His newest releases are pictured frist.

Geoff Hunt lives in Wimbledon, England with his wife and two sons. He was born in 1948, and studied graphic design at Kingston and Epsom Schools of Art from 1966-70, becoming a freelance artist and designer after working two years in advertising. He served as Art Editor of the journal WARSHIP from 1977-79, and has designed many books on marine subjects (including a bang-up job on Seamanship in the Age of Sail) for Conway Maritime Press. Hunt and his wife spent 1979-80 cruising to the Mediterranean and back in their boat Kipper ...a voyage described in an article in Practical Boat Owner October 1982. He was elected to membership in the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1989, and has been Honorary Treasurer of that organisation for the past several years.

The artist's work is on permanent exhibition at The Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth ... notably a series of twelve paintings depicting events in the Napoleanic wars; at the Royal Naval Submarine Museum, Gosport; and at the submarine base HMS Neptune, Faslane, Scotland.

He is currently (1996) exhibiting with the Mystic Maritime Gallery, Mystic; The Solent Gallery, Lymington and the Oliver Swann Galleries, Walton Street, London. In the past his work has been hung in several US Galleries, including the John Stobart Gallery, Boston; Hanover Square Gallery, New York and the Gallery Americana, Carmel, California.

John Harland is author of Seamanship in the Age of Sail, an excellent reference companion to Patrick O'Brian's novels of the sea. The volume is a well-illustrated compendium of the technical details of how these magnificent tall ships were operated by their officers and crews. Dr. Harland lives in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
