About Keith Rocco

The artist, Keith Rocco, pictured here, has succeeded wonderfully in building on the legacy of Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth. His art recalls the golden age of American illustration. His figures are alive and convincing and his images breathe with human drama. And now Mr. Rocco is offering a new "Collector's 200" series, which we believe will prove to be most popular. Because of the very limited edition these prints will be a scarce commodity and very much sought after.

The marriage of authenticity and human feeling in Rocco's paintings is the secret of his success, drawing people to his work. Jim Kelly, senior exhibit designer at the Milwaukee Public Museum, told the Chicago Tribune that most historical artists stiffen up when trying to faithfully recreate minute details of an earlier era, and not only is Rocco's work correct in detail, but it "transcends attention to arms, uniforms, and equipment. He creates historically convincing work with dramatic emotional style." This earned Rocco the commission for three large murals that now grace the walls of the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum.

Rocco's painting Defense of Little Round Top by the Twentieth Maine, July 2, 1863 stands on permanent display at a wayside exhibit on the Gettysburg Battlefield. An historian observed, "Of all the paintings of the 20th Maine, that was the best for capturing how the soldier would have seen the fight. There's a realistic, gritty quality to his work that other artists don't have."

Peter Cozzens, author of No Better Place to Die, This Terrible Sound and The Shipwreck of Their Hopes recalls, "I simply cannot imagine writing a book that did not have a work of Keith Rocco on the dust jacket. They convey the essence of the book."

Aside from the experiences and field work he does, what most often brinds the war to life for Rocco are the written accounts of the men who survived it. Rocco describes the feeling when he touches the past: "I'm alone. It's quiet. My attention is wrapped in the writing. Then my mind can transcend the words and picture as best I can what it was really like."

When he applies these evoked images to canvas, historical art is the richer.
