About Dale Gallon

The images of the Civil War that Dale Gallon creates in his art are moments which entire generations have studied and have come to understand both emotionally and strategically. For nearly twenty years, he has drawn inspiration for his paintings from the heroic moments in individual men's lives written down in army documents, personal letters, and published historical data. From the infantry soldier to the cavalry officer, Dale draws from their personal accounts. A native of Southern California, Dale began his interest in art and military history at a young age. While still in high school he won a Hallmark Cards scholarship to art school and graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He worked in the field of commercial illustration for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation and as a free lance artist in Los Angeles. In addition to his commercial illustration, he taught at the University of California Long Beach.

While still on the west coast, Dale released his first limited edition Civil War print in 1980. During this period the Civil War genre of art that is so widely recognized today was in its infancy. Dale blazed a path for other artists to follow, setting high standards along the way. His love of the battle of Gettysburg and the town itself drew him, his wife Anne, and their three young sons to the east coast only four years later. Once Dale settled into the Gettysburg area he proceeded to paint Civil War art with an emphasis on the three day battle in his new hometown. After moving to Gettysburg Dale remarked, "I happen to live within a mile or two of where General Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia into the pivotal battle of the War. The battlefield is my office. I don't need much more inspiration. I suspect people who collect my paintings feel that on the canvas." Dale has produced more than seventy fine paintings related to America's military past. His works are sought after world wide and are currently displayed at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA, the Pentagon, Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Tanenbaum Park & Guilford Battleground in Greensboro, NC, Virginia Military Institute, Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS Minnesota State Capital, and numerous other private collections.

Dale prides himself on his attention to detail and the historical accuracy of his work. To aid him in the complex research of his historical paintings, he employs two military historians. They are responsible for researching every detail in the scene and writing a comprehensive historical essay which accompanies each print. Each of Dale's paintings are a history lesson on canvas. Perhaps no better compliment could be paid to this renowned artist than that noted by his own "hometown" paper, The Gettysburg Times, which remarked on November 17, 1992, "Dale Gallon continues to provide collectors of limited edition prints with the reality of the Civil War that is unmatched by other artists."

As for the future, Dale plans to continue capturing the heroic moments of the Civil War both on and off the battlefields. With the superbly preserved Gettysburg National Military Park as his "back yard," Dale can not help but be inspired daily. He hopes to help our future generations understand what a great history our nation has and stimulate the thirst for historical knowledge for all Americans.

It is said that great things can be accomplished if a person contains a passion for its cause. Dale has that passion. And his artistic ability allows him to share it with others. It is through Dale's art that America's history is kept alive and well.
